About the NPS Censored & At Risk Reporting Form
Help us protect resources that are at risk of destruction or have been censored
Use this form to anonymously
protect digital and physical interpretive resources that are at risk of destruction, and
document instances of censorship in the National Park Service.
This may include censorship or destruction of materials about diversity, equity, inclusion & accessibility initiatives, LGBTQ+ stories, civil rights history, disability rights, environmental justice, biological assessments, climate or other environmental impacts, or any other material on topics that are being censored or are at risk for political reasons.
We are collecting instances of any of the following that have been deleted, edited, hidden, or otherwise censored due to their content, or may be at risk:
NPS webpage is any webpage hosted on NPS.gov or otherwise published by the NPS
Digital product is any word document, spreadsheet, PDF, or other electronic record of data, notes, studies, training guides. It may or may not ever have been publicly released.
Physical item is an exhibit, wayside, signage, handout or other interpretive or informational physical material.
Program is any scheduled interpretive, educational activity organized for the general public or specific stakeholders.
Editing may include both full deletion of terms and concepts and people. It also may include subtler types of editing such as rewording to downplay or obscure important issues, historical context, or environmental impacts.
Deletion can include either destruction or just removal from public view.
At-Risk We are also collecting digital copies / documentation of material which you consider to be possibly under threat from future censorship, editing, or deletion . Include things that you worry may be “disappeared” after you leave.
No instance of censorship is too small. If in doubt, report it. Sometimes the patterns are more important than the individual actions. If it was censored and then restored, please still report it. If you just consider it at risk, please report it.
Your identity will remain anonymous. However if you will be uploading electronic files such as PDFs or pictures, please use a burner Google/Gmail account to hide your identity from Google & others. Create a new Google account with a pseudonym. No disguise is complete, but this will help. Also consider removing metadata from pictures and other files that may identify you.
We are seeking all at risk or deleted/edited/censored content, whether the action was ordered by a superior, or implied by a superior, results directly from an official order (executive, secretarial) issued after January 19, 2025 or is a result of a park's defensive self censorship. For resources on fighting back against censorship in your Park, see What to do if you get asked to edit, censor, or remove a website, sign, wayside or other educational exhibit and Insulate Content Against Censorship.
We are publishing analyses and select pieces at Resistance Rangers Uncensored to tell the story of how NPS storytelling and scientific work is being abused in this period. We are also being discreet with at-risk materials to avoid them being targeted because of publicity through this work.
We will be cataloguing all submissions to preserve this important work and make it available for future scholarship and interpretation.
If you have questions or ideas or would like to help the Resistance Rangers Uncensored Project fight censorship within the National Park Service, please message us through this secure contact form.
