Why the Jolly Roger?

On February 26th, 2025,  the Resistance Rangers adopted the Jolly Ranger illustration by Dan Wiese as their logo.

History of the Jolly Roger

The Jolly Roger is the general term for a variety of flags closely associated with pirates from the 1700s. Pirates raised the flag before or during an attack as a way to signal their identity. The most (in)famous version of the Jolly Roger is the skull and crossbones, which symbolizes danger, death, and ruthlessness. The flags were designed to strike fear into the victims.

In more modern history, the skull and crossbones has been used by many groups to symbolize resistance against authorities.

Why we chose the Jolly Ranger

The Jolly Ranger clearly signals our intent to the current administration and their attacks on public lands. We are fierce protectors and will give no quarter to those who seek to destroy parks and public lands.

Also it’s cool as heck.
